Mother massaging infant boy

Baby massage has been used for hundreds of years in many different and diverse cultures throughout the world

...as a means of helping parents to get to know and understand their babies, help stimulate babys development and ease his/her transition from the womb to the world and to enhance the relationship between parent and child.

Touch is one of our most important senses and it is natural instinct to touch one another. Massage helps to re-inforce the power of touch and enhances the use of touch in a positive manner.

What is baby massage used for?

Relief - massage can aid in relieiving a number of common conditions suffered by babies which can make them uncomfortable in the early days and weeks of their life. In particular massage is very useful at relieving colic and wind, relieving constipation, relieving the pain of teething and easing colds and congestion

Relaxation - massage is excellent at aiding relaxation and reducing stress levels in both the baby and the parent. Skin stimulation causes the baby's body to produce prolactin and oxytocin - also known as 'feel good' hormones. These horomones help to lower the levels of cortisols and adrenaline in the body which are the hormones responsible for the feeling of stress and anxiety

Stimulation and Development - studies have shown that there is a strong link between maternal contact and the stimulation and development of a child. Stimulation of the skin can improve brain to body communication in babies by helping the nervous sytem to mature

Bonding - Baby massage plays an iportant part in enhancing, beginning and continuing the bonding process between parent and child. Bonding is an important factor in both the babies health after birth by promoting feelings of love and security, and the health of the mother after birth
